A new exhibit in the nation's capital on Elvis Presley's rise from third-tier country singer to superstar reveals how negative early press coverage was about the rocker.
"There's something about the press in the mid-'50s where they wanted to be arbiters of social values, and this man looked like a menace to many," said Newseum president Kenneth A. Paulson.
That sentiment is illustrated by a police officer quoted in Time magazine on June 16, 1956, about the hip-shaking singer: "If he did that in the street, we'd arrest him."

A spark that helped ignite Elvis Presley's fame more than 50 years ago was lit by the newspaper editors and critics who hated him.
They detested his voice and thought his moves were unfit for family publications, all while teenagers went wild.
That once-shocking style and the clash with the media also is making Elvis the subject of a new exhibition at the Newseum, a history museum that celebrates the First Amendment.

Back in 2005, the Elvis Presley-inspired "All Shook Up"-- trying testy critics' patience as another entry in the "jukebox musical" genre reviewers tend to endure rather than enjoy -- shuttered after just six months and a modest 213 performances.
However, the short-run hip-swiveler found it could still grind its pelvis on the regional/school theater circuit.
Now it lays a little burnin' love on (Viva) Las Vegas as Signature Productions rocks "All Shook Up" for a nearly monthlong, 20-show run at the Summerlin Library Performing Arts Center.
